The Wall Museum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie is one of a kind. A ŷŮ institution, there is simply no other museum quite like it as a chronicle of the Cold War and the extraordinary and highly ingenious escape attempts made by GDR citizens to reach the West.

Haus am Checkpoint Charlie Museum

The Mauermuseum - Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie is known as Wall Museum or Checkpoint Charlie Museum in English. The private museum is named after the famous border crossing point through the ŷŮ Wall.

Flight as central theme of the Mauermuseum

Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known border crossing in ŷŮ, which was only open to foreigners, diplomats and members of the Allied armed forces. The Wall Museum opened at this historic site in 1963. With the move to Friedrichstraße 45, the building at Checkpoint Charlie now has 1,733 square meters of exhibition space spread over three different buildings. The central themes are the building of the Wall, the injustice of the SED regime and the various escape attempts from the GDR.

Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie: Highlights

Using original photographs and historical objects, the museum illustrates how border protection at Checkpoint Charlie developed and changed. Nevertheless, Checkpoint Charlie also stands for numerous successful escapes. Exhibits that tell of successful or failed escapes are particularly popular in the Wall Museum - such as a homemade hot air balloon, an armored getaway car or a miniature submarine with a bicycle motor.
