Potsdamer Platz was created after reunification. The ensemble of skyscrapers and futuristic new buildings forms a district all of its own.

Potsdamer Platz is one of the most famous squares in Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×. In the 1990s, the former wasteland developed into its own urban district, planned by architects. The square and the streets around it have not grown like other Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ× neighborhoods. Where high-rise buildings, cinemas, theaters and restaurants attract people today was a wasteland until the fall of the Wall.

Potsdamer Platz before the Second World War

Potsdamer Platz also looks back on a history before the Second World War. In the 1830s, people could stroll through a green area designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel on the same spot. With the construction of the long-distance train station, Potsdamer Platz became an important transportation hub in Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×. Restaurants, hotels and cultural facilities were built around the new station. The name also dates from this time: the square was named after the Potsdamer Tor, which stood on the Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×-Potsdamer Chaussee. Even after the First World War, Potsdamer Platz retained its importance as a transportation hub. The traffic lights installed in 1924, the first of their kind in Europe, bear witness to this period.

Between East and West: Potsdamer Platz becomes wasteland

The Second World War left Potsdamer Platz in ruins. This is where the territories of the occupying powers met. With the construction of the Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ× Wall in 1961, the area was also practically divided. The course of the Wall across the square can still be traced today by means of markings on the ground. Life only returned to the square after the fall of the Wall. Potsdamer Platz, as it emerged after reunification, was planned as an entire city district on the drawing board. Architects Renzo Piano and Christoph Kohlbecker emerged as the winners of a competition. They planned it in collaboration with other architects.

Architectural highlights

The three futuristic high-rise buildings that frame Alte Potsdamer Straße are striking. The two buildings on the left were designed by Piano and Kohlbecker, while the one on the right was designed by Hans Kollhoff. The Panorama Point is located in the Kollhoff Tower. From the viewing platform, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view over Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×. The open-air exhibition "Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×er Blicke" (Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ× Views) in the Kollhoff Tower shows the transformation of Potsdamer Platz in pictures.

The Center am Potsdamer Platz, formerly known as the Sony Center, is also architecturally exciting. Architect Helmut Jahn designed the ensemble consisting of seven individual buildings. It is brought together by a spectacular roof construction. Marlene-Dietrich-Platz was planned as the center of the urban quarter. The most famous buildings are the casino and the musical theater, which were designed by Piano/Kohlbecker.

Sights at Potsdamer Platz

Visitors to Potsdamer Platz can discover evidence of times gone by. To this day, Europe's first traffic lights bear witness to its early importance as a transportation hub. The fragments of the Imperial Hall of the former Hotel Esplanade date from the same period. They can be seen at the Center am Potsdamer Platz. The course of the Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ× Wall can still be traced on the ground today. At the entrance to the S-Bahn station are some original sections of the Wall.

Leipziger Platz

Leipziger Platz is right next door. It was laid out as an octagon in 1734 and is now mainly occupied by the Mall of Å·ÃÀÊìÅ®ÂÒÂ×, a large shopping center.
